As tensions escalate in West Asia, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, the Government of India has activated a comprehensive response mechanism to ensure energy security, maritime safety, and the welfare of Indian citizens abroad.

The government has reassured citizens that petrol, diesel, and LPG supplies remain stable across the country. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry has urged people to avoid panic buying and rely only on verified information, warning against misinformation spreading through unofficial channels.

To manage LPG demand efficiently, authorities have intensified supply measures. Over 500,000 5-kg FTL cylinders have been sold since March 23, with more than 67,000 units sold in a single day. States have been directed to prioritize domestic consumption and essential services, while strict action is being taken against hoarding and black marketing, with over 4,000 enforcement raids conducted so far.

Simultaneously, the government is accelerating the expansion of piped natural gas (PNG). Since March 2026, over 342,000 new connections have been added, alongside 370,000 fresh registrations. Ten states have already received additional LPG allocations linked to reform-based PNG expansion efforts.

In response to rising global crude oil prices, the government has reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per litre to shield consumers. Export duties have also been imposed to ensure sufficient domestic availability.

Maritime operations remain under close watch. The Directorate General of Shipping confirmed that more than 1,130 Indian seafarers have been safely repatriated so far, including 155 in the last 24 hours. Ports across India continue to function normally without congestion.

For Indians stranded in the region, the Ministry of External Affairs and Indian missions are operating 24/7 helplines and evacuation support systems. Alternative travel routes are being arranged amid airspace restrictions. Since February 28, nearly 649,000 passengers have returned to India.

The government reiterated that it is fully prepared to tackle any emerging challenges and urged citizens to remain calm, conserve energy, and cooperate with official advisories.
