The sacred Mahaparinirvana site in Kushinagar has become the focal point of global peace dialogue as the International Buddhist Conference 2026 commenced with grandeur on Tuesday. Scheduled from March 31 to April 2, the three-day event has brought together monks, scholars, policymakers, and youth from India and countries including South Korea, Japan, and Laos.

The conference aims to explore the relevance of Lord Buddha’s teachings in today’s world, especially at a time marked by geopolitical tensions and uncertainty. The inauguration took place at the Mahaparinirvana Temple with traditional rituals and the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. A major highlight was the unveiling of the ‘Buddha Life Gallery,’ showcasing the life and philosophy of Buddha through immersive exhibits.

Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh emphasized that Buddha’s message of peace, compassion, and coexistence holds immense relevance in today’s conflict-ridden global landscape. He stated that such international platforms strengthen cultural diplomacy and foster mutual understanding among nations.

The opening day featured academic sessions on “Buddhism from Monastic Perspectives” and “Buddhist-Jain Dialogue,” alongside a student painting competition themed “Dhamma, Dialogue, and Development.” Participants creatively expressed Buddhist values through art, reflecting deep engagement with the philosophy.

A panel discussion involving international delegates highlighted Buddhism’s role in building inclusive societies and promoting global harmony. Senior officials also noted that Uttar Pradesh is तेजी से emerging as a key destination on the global Buddhist tourism map, with sites like Kushinagar, Sarnath, and Shravasti attracting pilgrims worldwide.

Upcoming sessions will focus on development strategies, investment opportunities, and a Dhamma-based vision for Kushinagar by 2030. The conference will conclude with a peace march and cultural performances, including a musical presentation by renowned singer Kailash Kher.
