PNB launches ‘PNB Digi Shrestha’ scheme offering loans up to ₹5 lakh
Anytime News Network | Report: Pooja Srivastava:
Marking the occasion of International Women’s Day, Punjab National Bank, one of India’s largest public sector lenders, has launched the “PNB Digi Shrestha Digital Loan Scheme” aimed at promoting women-led rural entrepreneurship. While the bank describes the initiative as a step toward financial empowerment, critics warn that easy access to loans without adequate support systems could push rural women into financial stress.
The scheme has been introduced specifically for existing women customers who are members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission. Under the initiative, eligible women can avail loans of up to ₹5 lakh, with the entire sanctioning and account opening process conducted digitally.
According to the bank, the scheme promises a seamless digital application journey, minimal documentation and faster loan approvals. However, experts point out that limited digital literacy and poor internet connectivity in many rural areas could pose serious challenges for beneficiaries trying to access such fully digital banking services.
Observers also argue that while government campaigns promoting initiatives such as “Lakhpati Didis” highlight the importance of women-led enterprises, financial credit alone may not guarantee success. Many rural entrepreneurs struggle due to lack of training, marketing access, infrastructure and long-term institutional support.
In such circumstances, easy availability of credit could turn into a financial burden if small businesses fail to generate stable income. Analysts suggest that alongside loan schemes, stronger policy focus on skill development, financial literacy and market linkages is essential for sustainable entrepreneurship among rural women.
Punjab National Bank has maintained that the Digi Shrestha scheme will strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem in rural India while encouraging digital banking adoption. However, the effectiveness of the initiative will largely depend on its implementation at the grassroots level and whether beneficiaries receive adequate guidance and support.
As India celebrates women’s achievements on International Women’s Day, the debate continues over whether credit-driven empowerment models are sufficient to deliver long-term financial independence for rural women.
