The Election Commission of India has intensified preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry, emphasizing strict monitoring and compliance measures. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners S.S. Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, conducted a comprehensive review meeting with central observers.

A total of 282 observers, including general, police, and expenditure observers, participated via video conferencing. State-wise deployment includes 136 observers in Assam, 108 in Kerala, and 38 in Puducherry.

The Commission has issued strict directives to ensure that elections are conducted in a free, fair, and intimidation-free environment. Observers have been instructed to enforce the Model Code of Conduct rigorously and act promptly on any violations.

They have also been directed to make their contact details publicly available for citizens and political stakeholders to report grievances. Ensuring basic facilities at polling stations—such as seating arrangements and mobile deposit points—has also been prioritized.

Additionally, the Commission stressed robust technological monitoring through webcasting and control rooms. Observers are required to verify proper training of polling staff, timely data entry, correct use of indelible ink, and accurate documentation, including Form 17-C compliance.

Experts believe such extensive oversight can enhance electoral transparency, but its effectiveness will ultimately depend on execution at the grassroots level.
