India’s Expanding Satellite Capabilities

🚀 135 Satellites Launched, 56 Operational

Anytime News Network In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that India has launched 135 satellites so far, with 56 currently operational. This includes 21 Earth Observation satellites out of 50, 20 Communication satellites out of 43, 8 Navigation satellites out of 11, 4 Space Science missions out of 7, and 3 Technology Demonstration satellites out of 24.

🌍 Strengthening Disaster Response & Connectivity

Developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation, NavIC has seen significant growth in commercial and public use. Over 10,400 railway engines are now equipped with real-time tracking, while more than 40,000 fishing vessels use NavIC receivers for tracking and emergency alerts. Over 60 global handset models support NavIC positioning. Second-generation NVS satellites are being readied for launch.

Under the COSPAS-SARSAT programme, three satellites assist in life-saving search and rescue operations. In coordination with Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, NavIC broadcasts cyclone, tsunami and high-wave alerts directly to fishermen.

Communication satellites continue to power broadcasting, DTH, telecom, VSAT services, maritime and in-flight connectivity, tele-education and tele-medicine. Satellite internet is emerging as a key solution to bridge India’s digital divide under Digital India and BharatNet initiatives.
