Kolkata, March 30, 2026: Strengthening India’s maritime defense, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) has delivered the fourth Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), ‘Agray’, to the Indian Navy. The induction marks a significant milestone in India’s push toward indigenous defence manufacturing.
Measuring approximately 77 meters, Agray is among the largest waterjet-propelled warships in the Indian Navy. Designed specifically for operations in shallow waters, the vessel is equipped with advanced lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers, and sophisticated sonar systems, enabling it to detect and neutralize underwater threats with precision.
Built under the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping, the warship showcases India’s growing capability in designing and constructing complex naval platforms domestically. Notably, over 80% of the ship’s components are sourced locally, aligning with the government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.
The vessel also revives a legacy name, carrying forward the heritage of the earlier INS Agray, which was decommissioned in 2017. This reflects the Navy’s tradition of preserving historic identities while advancing technologically.
Experts highlight that the addition of Agray will significantly enhance India’s anti-submarine warfare, mine countermeasure capabilities, and coastal surveillance operations. At a time when maritime challenges are evolving rapidly in the Indian Ocean Region, such assets are crucial for maintaining strategic dominance.
The delivery of Agray underscores India’s commitment to reducing import dependence while building a robust domestic defence ecosystem. It is yet another step toward achieving technological excellence and strengthening national security through indigenous innovation.
