The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a major initiative to strengthen India’s digital security architecture by deploying next-generation AI-enabled biometric deduplication and document verification systems. This advanced system enhances the accuracy and efficiency of enrolment and update transactions carried out by UIDAI.
Described as an “Invisible Shield,” the initiative marks a new chapter in India’s digital security mission. It introduces a multi-layered AI defence system capable of performing billions of computations in real time to safeguard citizen trust and ensure data integrity.
Population-Scale Biometric Deduplication
To uphold the principle of “One Person, One Identity,” UIDAI operates one of the world’s largest biometric deduplication systems. Every new Aadhaar enrolment is matched against the entire Aadhaar database to ensure uniqueness.
In collaboration with the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad, UIDAI has developed advanced indigenous AI models for all biometric modalities, including fingerprints, facial recognition, and iris authentication. These AI models operate on NVIDIA DGX high-performance inference infrastructure, enabling secure and efficient processing of population-scale data.
Each deduplication transaction involves billions of calculations. With the adoption of cutting-edge AI inference techniques, UIDAI has already completed enhanced deduplication processes in several states and is progressing toward nationwide implementation in the coming months.
Smart Document Verification: Preventing Fraud at the Source
To curb enrolment fraud, UIDAI has introduced AI-driven document metadata extraction and verification against authentic source databases. The system leverages DigiLocker APIs for document authentication and uses advanced semantic analysis and metadata extraction powered by NVIDIA AI inference infrastructure.
This intelligent platform ensures document authenticity, reduces processing time during enrolment and update procedures, and significantly enhances the overall quality of services provided to Aadhaar number holders.
Through this AI-powered transformation, UIDAI reaffirms its commitment to building a secure, efficient, and citizen-centric digital identity ecosystem for India.
