ANYTIME NEWS NETWORK. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of alleged misuse of its name and logo by certain non-governmental organizations across the country.
The Commission observed that several NGOs have registered themselves under misleading names closely resembling the statutory body. A recent case involves an entity registered as “National Human Rights Council (NHRC)” in Delhi in 2022. The organization reportedly claims associations with NITI Aayog, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, among others. Visiting cards identifying individuals as “State President, Karnataka” have also surfaced.
The NHRC stated that such misleading nomenclature may create public confusion, falsely implying authorization or affiliation with the Commission. It warned that continued misuse could erode public trust, lead to misuse of mandate, potential financial misappropriation, and confusion among public officials in distinguishing between statutory bodies and NGOs.
The Commission has issued notices to Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police of all States and Union Territories, directing them to identify such entities and initiate necessary legal action within two weeks. This includes cancellation of registrations obtained in violation of applicable norms.
Additionally, the Chief Secretary and DGP of Karnataka, along with the Chief Secretary and Police Commissioner of Delhi, have been asked to submit action-taken reports regarding the specific NGO operating under the misleading name.
The NHRC reiterated that misuse of its name or emblem will not be tolerated and strict legal measures will follow against violators.
