The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a woman was doused with petrol and burnt alive by a group of people in Farrukhabad district, Uttar Pradesh on 6th September, 2025. The victim had gone out to buy medicine for her daughter when she was assaulted. Later, she succumbed to her injuries at a hospital.
The Commission has examined the contents of the news report, if true, raise a serious issue of human rights violations. Therefore, it has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
The report is expected to include the action taken against the perpetrators and compensation, if any, provided to the next of kin (NOK) of the deceased.
