In a significant move aimed at transforming India’s mineral and metals sector, NMDC Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad.

The collaboration focuses on advancing research in iron ore beneficiation, agglomeration, green steel technologies, alternative iron-making using indigenous raw materials, and advanced process modeling and simulation. The partnership also seeks to unlock new pathways for extracting critical and rare earth minerals from primary and secondary sources.

NMDC Chairman and Managing Director Amitabh Mukherjee stated that combining IIT Hyderabad’s research excellence with NMDC’s domain expertise will accelerate innovation-driven growth and strengthen India’s mineral security.

Aligned with rapid digital transformation in mining, the NMDC-IIT Hyderabad alliance will promote pilot initiatives in autonomous operations, Artificial Intelligence, IoT-enabled systems, and drone-based monitoring under the Mining 4.0 framework.

The partnership aims to integrate operational strength with research-led innovation to deliver sustainable, technology-driven solutions that enhance productivity and environmental management.

Notably, this milestone coincides with the 50th anniversary of NMDC’s R&D Centre, marking five decades of dedicated contribution to India’s mineral development journey. Experts believe the collaboration will play a key role in shaping a resilient and self-reliant mining ecosystem for the future.
