New Delhi, March 30, 2026: In a major leap toward sustainable infrastructure, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has transferred its innovative bio-bitumen technology for large-scale industrial use. This breakthrough enables agricultural residues, including stubble, to be converted into eco-friendly road construction material—addressing both pollution and waste management challenges.

The technology has been jointly developed by CSIR-Central Road Research Institute and CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum after years of research. It uses thermochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to produce a renewable alternative to petroleum-based bitumen, with performance comparable to conventional materials.

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan described the innovation as “transformational,” highlighting its potential to connect agriculture with infrastructure development. He emphasized that farmers can now monetize crop residues instead of burning them, thereby reducing environmental pollution while generating additional income.

Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh termed it a strong example of the “waste-to-wealth” model. He noted that the technology aligns with India’s net-zero commitments, clean energy transition, and the vision of self-reliance.

The adoption of bio-bitumen is expected to significantly cut carbon emissions and reduce dependence on imported petroleum-based materials. Given India’s rapidly expanding road network, this innovation could be a game-changer for both economic and environmental sustainability.

Experts believe that large-scale deployment of this technology could revolutionize the road construction sector. It has the potential to strengthen rural economies, enhance farmer incomes, and contribute to cleaner air by curbing stubble burning.

This initiative marks a crucial step toward building a circular economy and sustainable infrastructure ecosystem, positioning India as a global leader in green innovation and climate-conscious development.
