Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav inaugurated the Silver Jubilee edition of the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2026 organized by The Energy and Resources Institute, along with the launch of the Ministry’s dedicated “Him-Connect” platform.

Him-Connect is designed as a structured interface to translate research supported under the National Mission on Himalayan Studies into scalable, real-world solutions. The platform brings together researchers, startups, industry leaders, investors, and policymakers to bridge the gap between science and society in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

In his keynote address, Yadav warned that the world is not on track to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C under the Paris Agreement framework. He stressed that the climate crisis is no longer about scientific consensus but about the scale and speed of global action. Emission reductions remain inadequate, adaptation finance is insufficient, and sustainable development progress is uneven.

Highlighting India’s commitments, the minister reiterated targets of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030, reducing emissions intensity by 45% from 2005 levels, and attaining net-zero by 2070. He emphasized that transformation must extend beyond policy reforms to structural shifts in energy systems, economic models, and governance frameworks.

Among the dignitaries present was Guyana’s Vice President Bharat Jagdeo, alongside global sustainability leaders.

The summit underscored India’s role as a voice of the Global South and reaffirmed its commitment to climate justice, equitable transitions, and sustainable growth.
