From Disability to Identity Politics: Big Themes, Limited Ground Change

A national conference at Dr. Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University brought together scholars, writers, and policymakers to discuss pressing issues like disability inclusion, gender equality, and social responsibility. However, beyond the intellectual discussions, a key question lingered—how much of this dialogue translates into real-world impact?

Speakers emphasized the need for an inclusive society, highlighting that marginalized groups, including persons with disabilities, women, and underprivileged communities, still face systemic barriers. While policies and schemes exist, their implementation remains inconsistent, raising concerns about the effectiveness of such academic platforms.

The conference also addressed identity politics and social justice, with experts pointing out that literature plays a crucial role in shaping public consciousness. Yet, critics argue that these conversations often remain confined to academic circles, with limited influence on ground realities.

The closing poetry session, however, struck a different chord. Through humor and satire, poets delivered sharp commentary on inflation, governance, and societal contradictions. Their verses resonated deeply with the audience, reflecting a mix of amusement and discomfort.

Satirical lines targeting rising fuel prices and political dynamics drew loud applause, but also underscored growing public frustration. The poetic expressions seemed to capture what formal discussions often fail to convey—the raw, unfiltered reality of everyday struggles.

In essence, while the conference succeeded in creating a platform for dialogue, it also exposed the gap between intellectual discourse and actionable change. The challenge remains: can such conversations move beyond words to create tangible transformation?
