Systemic Negligence Raises Questions on Infrastructure Safety

A construction accident at an under-construction rail overbridge in Chandauli has exposed serious lapses in safety and supervision. The incident occurred on March 18, 2026, when a portion of the deck slab collapsed during concreting work on the Mughal Sarai–Gaya rail section under the DFCC route.
According to reports, the हादसा happened late रात when a hydra crane’s boom struck the staging structure, causing part of the slab to गिर. While no casualties were reported, the incident has raised critical concerns about on-site safety protocols and project management.
The project was being executed by Shreshthabhishek Buildcon Pvt Ltd. Following initial findings of negligence, an FIR has been lodged against the contractor. Additionally, a junior engineer has been suspended, and departmental action has been initiated against the assistant engineer and project manager.
However, critics argue that such post-incident actions fail to address deeper systemic issues. Infrastructure experts point out that poor supervision, lack of accountability, and compromised safety practices continue to plague public construction projects.
The Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation has constituted a three-member technical committee, headed by a Joint Managing Director, to investigate the incident. The committee has been directed to submit its findings within three days.
While authorities emphasize swift action, the key question remains whether this investigation will lead to meaningful accountability or end up as another routine inquiry. The incident highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety standards to prevent potential disasters in the future.
