Delhi, Mumbai, Kanpur Among Cities Where Thousands of Accused Walk Free Despite Women Safety Claims

Rising Acquittals in Crimes Against Women Raise Serious Questions on India’s Justice System

Fresh crime disposal data for 2024 has exposed alarming cracks in the justice delivery system related to crimes against women across India’s metropolitan cities. While governments continue to highlight women’s safety initiatives, the latest figures reveal a disturbing reality — the number of accused acquitted in courts is significantly higher than the number of convictions in many major cities.

According to the official data, 4,558 persons were convicted in concluded cases of crimes against women across 19 metropolitan cities. However, a staggering 11,991 accused were acquitted, raising serious concerns over investigation quality, prosecution failures, and delayed justice mechanisms.

Delhi recorded the highest number of convictions at 723, but shockingly, 1,607 accused were acquitted in the same category of crimes. Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur also reported large acquittal numbers, exposing what critics describe as a “weak deterrence system” against offenders.

Kanpur reported 1,636 convictions, one of the highest in the country, yet experts argue that conviction statistics alone do not reflect the real condition of women’s safety unless the quality and speed of justice delivery improve. Lucknow’s figures also triggered debate after the city reported 151 convictions and 205 discharges but zero acquittals, leading to questions regarding reporting patterns and procedural consistency.

Women rights activists say the growing gap between convictions and acquittals is discouraging victims from seeking legal help. Legal experts blame poor evidence collection, weak prosecution, hostile witnesses, and delayed trials for the low conviction efficiency in sensitive crimes.

The data has once again intensified demands for police reforms, fast-track courts, better forensic infrastructure, and stronger victim protection systems. Critics argue that unless conviction certainty improves, slogans around women empowerment and safety may continue to remain political rhetoric rather than ground reality.
