Green Push or Policy Illusion?

GST Cuts Raise More Questions Than Hope
Sustainability Claims vs Ground Reality

The Indian government’s recent GST rationalization has been projected as a major boost toward green transformation. However, beneath the optimistic narrative lies a growing skepticism about its actual impact. Under the leadership of Narendra Modi, these reforms are being framed as climate-conscious decisions, but critics argue they may be more symbolic than substantive.

The reduction of GST on Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) services from 12% to 5% is being highlighted as a win for sustainability. Yet, industry insiders point out that small and medium enterprises continue to struggle with high compliance costs, outdated infrastructure, and operational inefficiencies. A tax cut alone is unlikely to fix these deep-rooted issues.

Similarly, lowering GST on biodegradable products is being marketed as a strong step against plastic pollution. In reality, the availability and affordability of such alternatives remain inconsistent across India. Consumer adoption depends not just on pricing but also on accessibility and awareness—areas where progress is still slow.

The move to cut GST on commercial vehicles and buses from 28% to 18% is also under scrutiny. While it may reduce upfront costs, the larger challenges in the transport sector—fuel prices, poor infrastructure, and weak policy enforcement—remain unaddressed. Without tackling these, the environmental benefits could be minimal.

Overall, the reforms appear to lean more toward economic adjustment rather than genuine environmental transformation. Without robust implementation, monitoring, and complementary policies, this “green shift” risks becoming more of a narrative than a reality.
