World Sparrow Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at the Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden, highlighting the urgent need to conserve the rapidly declining bird species. The event was held at the Saras Auditorium in the presence of State Minister for Forest, Environment and Climate Change Dr Arun Kumar.
Zoo Director Sanjay Kumar Biswal welcomed the guests and emphasized that sparrows are an integral part of biodiversity, now facing extinction threats due to rapid urbanization and pollution. He encouraged citizens to provide food, water, and nesting spaces for these small birds.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Arun Kumar highlighted the ecological importance of sparrows, noting their role in controlling insects and dispersing seeds. He pointed out that modern architectural changes, including glass and concrete buildings, have reduced natural nesting spaces, leading to a sharp decline in their population.

Experts, including Professor Amita Kanaujia from University of Lucknow, educated visitors on conservation methods. Free distribution of bird nests, earthen pots, and grains was also carried out to promote awareness.
Competitions like quizzes and essay writing engaged students from various schools, with winners being felicitated during the समारोह. The event served as a reminder that even common species like sparrows require urgent attention and collective action to ensure their survival.
