New Delhi: In a significant move to strengthen India’s pharmaceutical supply chain and improve trade facilitation, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has officially notified Navi Mumbai International Airport as an authorized entry point for the import of medicines under the Drugs Rules, 1945.
Rule 43A Amended
The government has amended Rule 43A of the Drugs Rules, 1945, adding Navi Mumbai Airport to the list of designated airports permitted to handle pharmaceutical imports. The notification was issued after consultation with the Drugs Technical Advisory Board under the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
Total Entry Points Rise to 42
With this amendment, the total number of notified entry points—including airports, seaports, railheads, and land routes—for pharmaceutical imports has increased to 42. The expansion is expected to provide importers with greater operational flexibility and improve nationwide distribution.
Boost to Logistics and Trade
Industry experts believe the inclusion of Navi Mumbai Airport will enhance logistics efficiency, reduce transit time, and strengthen the pharmaceutical supply chain. The move is also expected to support the government’s Ease of Doing Business initiative by streamlining import operations.
Stronger Regulatory Oversight
According to the Ministry, the decision will not only facilitate smoother movement of imported medicines but also ensure effective regulatory supervision. The initiative reflects the government’s continued commitment to building a robust pharmaceutical ecosystem with modern infrastructure and efficient trade mechanisms.
