Concerns over television content regulation in India have intensified as data from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting reveals over 140 violations of programme and advertising codes in the past five years. The figures highlight persistent challenges in enforcing content standards across private TV channels.

Under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, broadcasters are required to adhere to strict guidelines prohibiting obscene, communal, defamatory, or misleading content. Despite these provisions, repeated violations indicate gaps in compliance and enforcement.

Between 2021 and 2025, authorities took action in 144 cases, including 50 warnings, 35 advisories, 54 apology scroll orders, 3 off-air directives, and one license cancellation.

L. Murugan informed Parliament that a three-tier grievance redressal system is in place, involving broadcasters, self-regulatory bodies, and government oversight.

However, media experts argue that recurring violations suggest that existing penalties may not be sufficient deterrents. The evolving media landscape, especially with the rise of digital platforms, further complicates enforcement.

While regulatory frameworks exist for print and digital media as well, ensuring accountability across platforms remains a pressing challenge. The key question remains—are current measures enough, or is stronger enforcement the need of the hour?
