The National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR), under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), organized an awareness programme on soil health, balanced fertilizer use and sustainable agriculture in Thakurpur village of Gosainganj block under its “Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav” initiative.

Scientists highlighted growing concerns over the excessive use of chemical fertilizers such as urea and DAP, warning that nutrient imbalance is degrading soil quality and pushing agricultural land towards infertility. Farmers were encouraged to adopt balanced fertilizer practices, including the use of Nano Urea and Nano DAP.

The programme emphasized the importance of organic farming methods such as compost, farmyard manure, bio-fertilizers and green manure crops. Experts also advocated integrating fisheries with agriculture to improve farm productivity and rural incomes.

Farmers were informed about various government initiatives, including oilseed and pulse missions, natural farming programmes, soil testing and soil health cards. Discussions also focused on fish disease management and the benefits of solar-powered irrigation pumps.

During the interaction, farmers raised concerns regarding irregular canal water supply, waterlogging, crop damage caused by stray cattle and blue bulls, and other challenges affecting agricultural productivity.

The programme was attended by 60 participants, including 53 farmers, fish cultivators and local stakeholders. Village head Pravesh Kumar Verma also participated in the event.

The visiting scientific team, including Dr. Sharad Kumar Singh, Dr. Tarachand and Dr. Akhilesh Kumar Mishra, stressed the need to protect soil fertility and adopt sustainable farming practices for future generations.

At the conclusion of the programme, farmers pledged to safeguard their farmlands and promote environmentally sustainable agriculture.
