In view of the current global and national economic situation, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced a major initiative to promote fuel conservation and strengthen public transportation systems across the state. Uttar Pradesh Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh issued a series of important directives aimed at reducing fuel consumption, encouraging electric mobility, and improving public transport infrastructure.

The minister stated that during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on May 11, 2026, detailed discussions were held regarding energy conservation and sustainable transportation policies. Following the meeting, the transport department has been directed to prepare proposals for providing exemptions in road tax and vehicle registration fees for the next 12 months to encourage electric vehicles and public transport services.

Dayashankar Singh instructed officials to increase bus frequency during peak hours so that more commuters prefer public transport over private cars. He also directed the transport department and Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation to coordinate special bus services for offices employing more than 500 staff members.

The minister emphasized reducing unnecessary government expenditure on fuel and vehicles. He ordered an audit of the “pool car” system and directed authorities to withdraw excess vehicles allotted to officials. Instructions were also issued to minimize the use of diesel and petrol wherever possible.

To promote electricity conservation, all department offices and depots have been instructed to switch off unnecessary lights, especially after 10 PM, and maintain air conditioner temperatures at 25–26 degrees Celsius.

The minister further recommended studying the “Chandauli Model” of generating energy through biogas from cow dung and exploring its implementation in transport depots and workshops. He also advised reducing the use of imported edible oils in corporation canteens and encouraging locally manufactured products.

Additional measures include evaluating PNG gas connections for offices and depots, prioritizing the use of bio-bitumen in construction works, and imposing a complete ban on official foreign tours for department officers over the next six months. Virtual meetings have also been encouraged instead of physical meetings for officials stationed outside headquarters.
