The sail training ship INS Sudarshini of the Indian Navy arrived at the historic port of Valletta in Malta on March 12, 2026, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing global maritime expedition Lokayan-26. The visit highlights the deepening maritime relationship between India and Malta and forms a key stage of the vessel’s ambitious 22,000-nautical-mile journey across international waters.
Before reaching Malta, the ship successfully transited the strategically vital Suez Canal and recently made a port call at Alexandria, Egypt. The voyage not only demonstrates India’s maritime heritage but also underlines the Indian Navy’s growing role in strengthening international maritime partnerships.
Upon arrival in Valletta, the Commanding Officer of the ship met Rachita Bhandari, India’s High Commissioner to Malta. During the interaction, discussions were held on enhancing bilateral maritime cooperation and strengthening diplomatic ties between the two nations. The High Commissioner emphasized that the presence of INS Sudarshini in Malta reflects India’s broader vision of ocean-based cooperation and people-to-people engagement.
During its stay, the ship’s crew will engage in professional interactions and courtesy calls with the Armed Forces of Malta. Several community-focused events are also planned onboard, including an “Open Ship” program for local school children and members of the Indian diaspora in Malta. These activities are aimed at promoting cultural exchange and strengthening goodwill between the two countries.
INS Sudarshini began its global expedition on January 20, 2026, from Kochi, India. The voyage is currently in its second month and continues to showcase India’s maritime training capabilities and diplomatic outreach.
After its Malta visit, the ship will proceed toward the French coast to participate in the renowned Escales à Sète maritime festival, where it will proudly represent India alongside some of the world’s most iconic tall ships.
