In a strong push to accelerate India’s sports economy, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called for enhanced public-private partnerships while addressing the audience at the final of the Aditya Birla Memorial Polo Cup in New Delhi.
Emphasizing the government’s commitment, Rajnath Singh stated that continuous efforts are being made to build a robust sports culture in the country, ensuring that athletes and youth have access to opportunities, resources, and recognition. He highlighted that collaboration between government bodies, private enterprises, and social organizations can significantly elevate India’s global standing in sports.
Describing polo as deeply rooted in India’s rich cultural heritage, he termed it a “heritage sport” with a legacy spanning thousands of years. He also acknowledged the vital role played by the Indian Army and the Indian Polo Association in preserving and promoting the sport.
The Defence Minister referred to flagship initiatives like ‘Khelo India’ and ‘Target Olympic Podium Scheme’, noting that these programs have opened new pathways for young athletes to excel. He further pointed out that the upcoming ‘National Sports Governance Bill’ and ‘Khelo Bharat Policy’ are expected to bring greater transparency and accountability within sports organizations, ensuring a fair and supportive environment for players.
Drawing parallels with sectors like industry and technology, he stressed that private sector involvement can inject professionalism, long-term vision, and sustainable support systems into sports. This, in turn, will provide athletes with access to world-class coaching, infrastructure, and international exposure.
Concluding his address, Rajnath Singh described polo as a unique blend of strength, speed, rhythm, strategy, discipline, and courage. He expressed confidence that with collective efforts, India will emerge as a formidable force in the global sports arena.
