India’s ambitious cooperative ride-hailing platform “Bharat Taxi” is being projected as an alternative to private aggregators, but early indicators suggest a challenging road ahead. Launched under the Ministry of Cooperation India, the platform aims to empower drivers but faces stiff competition and operational hurdles.

As per details shared by Amit Shah, the platform was established in June 2025 and officially launched in February 2026. While it has onboarded around 4.31 lakh driver-partners, its current reach remains limited compared to established private players dominating the market.

Operating on a zero-commission, subscription-based model, Bharat Taxi promises better earnings for drivers. However, experts question its long-term sustainability without strong user adoption, technological robustness, and brand trust.

Currently operational in Delhi-NCR and select cities of Gujarat, the platform is expanding to cities like Lucknow and Chandigarh. Yet, scaling into Tier-2 and Tier-3 regions brings challenges, particularly around digital adoption and infrastructure readiness.

Moreover, competing with well-entrenched private aggregators with vast networks and customer bases will require more than just a cooperative model—it will demand seamless service, competitive pricing, and strong execution.
