Dr. Kamini Singh, Director of JVKS Bio Energy Farmer Producer Company Ltd., has submitted a memorandum to Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Production Commissioner Deepak Kumar demanding the inclusion of Moringa (Drumstick/Shahjan) plants in the upcoming state plantation drive.
According to the memorandum, Moringa is emerging as a highly profitable and environmentally beneficial crop for farmers. Dr. Kamini Singh highlighted that Moringa leaves are currently being purchased in the market at prices ranging between ₹80 and ₹150 per kilogram, offering significant income opportunities for cultivators.
She emphasized that Moringa requires comparatively less water and maintenance, making it an ideal crop for sustainable agriculture, particularly in regions facing water scarcity. In addition to its economic value, the plant is also known for its strong carbon absorption capacity, making it an important contributor to climate protection and environmental sustainability.
The memorandum stated that including Moringa in large-scale plantation programmes could help the government achieve multiple objectives simultaneously, including increasing farmers’ income, promoting green cover, supporting climate action, and encouraging sustainable farming practices.
Dr. Singh also pointed out that rising health awareness has significantly increased the domestic and global demand for Moringa-based products. Its leaves, seeds, and pods are widely used in Ayurveda, nutraceuticals, food processing, and herbal wellness industries.
Agriculture experts believe that with proper policy support and plantation incentives, Moringa could emerge as a major cash crop for Indian farmers in the coming years while also supporting the country’s environmental goals.
