The Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) has launched a massive statewide crackdown on fake and substandard food products, exposing widespread violations in sauce, jam, jelly, mayonnaise, chutney and pickle manufacturing units.
During the special enforcement drive, officials inspected 496 manufacturing units, warehouses and wholesale establishments, collecting 801 food samples for laboratory testing. Authorities also seized 338.61 quintals of food products worth approximately ₹27.77 lakh, while 259.33 quintals of unsafe and unfit food items valued at nearly ₹17.56 lakh were destroyed.
Serious violations were detected in several districts. FIRs were registered in Unnao after fake sauces were allegedly manufactured using synthetic colours, while Shahjahanpur witnessed legal action against operators accused of recolouring spoiled fennel seeds for resale.
Major action was reported from Lucknow, Kanpur, Ghaziabad, Mathura, Hathras, Muzaffarnagar, Gorakhpur, Bareilly, Varanasi, Chandauli, Hapur, Kasganj, Baghpat, Saharanpur and Mau, where authorities seized expired products, destroyed contaminated raw materials, and sealed multiple manufacturing units operating under unhygienic conditions or without valid licences.
The department clarified that the drive specifically targeted large manufacturers, distributors and stockists, while small retailers and micro food businesses producing below 50 kilograms were excluded.
Officials said laboratory reports will determine further legal proceedings under the Food Safety and Standards Act. The government has reiterated its commitment to continuing strict enforcement against food adulteration and fake food manufacturing to safeguard public health.
