: Bhupender Yadav has called for stronger corporate participation and financial support for global big cat conservation efforts, stating that habitat restoration, technology-driven monitoring and community-based protection require long-term collaboration between governments, industries and civil society.

Addressing a conference organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry on the theme “Future of Global Economy, Industry and Society and Vision for India@100,” the Union Environment Minister announced that India will host the first International Big Cat Summit in New Delhi on June 1 and 2.

Yadav said the International Big Cat Alliance is a global conservation initiative launched under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to protect seven major big cat species — tiger, lion, cheetah, leopard, snow leopard, jaguar and puma. He noted that the headquarters of the intergovernmental alliance has been established in India.

The minister emphasized that corporate financing can significantly contribute to critical areas such as habitat restoration, technological surveillance, wildlife monitoring, conservation awareness, capacity building and community participation. According to him, protecting big cats is directly linked to maintaining ecological balance, biodiversity and water security across large landscapes.

Yadav highlighted that a Memorandum of Understanding already exists between CII and the International Big Cat Alliance and urged industry leaders to deepen their engagement in wildlife conservation initiatives. He said sustainable environmental protection can only succeed through collective responsibility and active participation from all sectors of society.

Speaking about India’s long-term development vision, the minister said the world is currently witnessing a transformative era shaped by artificial intelligence, green technologies, digital economies, climate change and geopolitical shifts. He stated that India is uniquely positioned to emerge as a global leader through innovation, economic resilience and sustainable growth.

He further noted that India has become the world’s third-largest country in renewable energy capacity. According to him, India’s solar energy capacity reached 150 GW by March 2026, compared to just 2.82 GW in 2014. Nearly 50 percent of the country’s installed electricity capacity now comes from non-fossil fuel sources, a target achieved ahead of the 2030 deadline.

The Environment Minister also said India reduced the emissions intensity of its GDP by over 36 percent between 2005 and 2020 and continues to make progress toward sustainable development and climate goals under international agreements.
