New Delhi: The Government of India’s flagship social security initiatives — Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), and Atal Pension Yojana (APY) — have completed 11 years of implementation, marking a major milestone in the country’s financial inclusion and welfare journey. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 9, 2015, these schemes were aimed at providing affordable insurance and pension support to economically weaker and vulnerable sections of society.
Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that the government’s vision behind these schemes was to ensure low-cost social security coverage for every citizen. According to official figures, PMJJBY, PMSBY, and APY have crossed over 27 crore, 58 crore, and 9 crore enrolments respectively.
Under PMJJBY, citizens receive life insurance coverage of Rs 2 lakh in case of death due to any reason at an annual premium of just Rs 436. As of April 29, 2026, over 27.43 crore people have enrolled in the scheme, while claims worth Rs 21,512.50 crore have been settled for more than 10.75 lakh beneficiaries. Women account for over 12.72 crore enrolments under the scheme.
PMSBY provides accidental insurance coverage of up to Rs 2 lakh for death or disability caused by accidents at an annual premium of only Rs 20. By April 29, 2026, more than 58.09 crore enrolments had been recorded and claims worth Rs 3,667.52 crore were settled for over 1.84 lakh beneficiaries. The scheme has also seen participation from over 27.45 crore women.
The Atal Pension Yojana has emerged as a major pension support scheme for workers in the unorganised sector. Subscribers receive a guaranteed monthly pension ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 after attaining 60 years of age. As of April 30, 2026, over 9.04 crore people had enrolled under APY, with women accounting for nearly 49 percent of total subscribers.
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the government has focused on digitising and simplifying enrolment and claim settlement procedures. The online Jan Suraksha portal has enabled citizens to enrol without visiting banks or post offices, while digital claim processing has ensured faster assistance to affected families.
The government believes these schemes have significantly strengthened India’s social security framework and provided financial confidence to millions of low-income households across the country.
