Issues notices to the DGP, Uttar Pradesh and DM Ghazipur, calling for a detailed report within two weeks
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a villager died and some others sustained injuries in a police lathi charge while protesting against the installation of electricity poles in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. The incident happened on 9th September, 2025.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights of the victims. Therefore, it has issued notices to the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh and the District Magistrate, Ghazipur, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
According to the media report, carried on 12th September, 2025, five police personnel have been placed under suspension after the incident.
