NHRC takes suo motu cognizance of the reported death of a villager and injuries to others in a police lathi charge while protesting against installation of electricity poles in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a villager died and some others sustained injuries in a police lathi charge while protesting against the installation of electricity poles in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. The incident happened on 9^th September, 2025.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights of the victims. Therefore, it has issued notices to the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh and the District Magistrate, Ghazipur, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.

According to the media report, carried on 12^th September, 2025, five police personnel have been placed under suspension after the incident.
