Loot in the Name of Health: How Hospitals and Pharma Cartels Exploit Patients

The tall claims of healthcare transparency have fallen flat in Uttar Pradesh. The UP Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) has conveniently washed its hands of the matter, passing the buck to the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA). While central and state governments have barely stirred under the pressure of the Supreme Court, the actions taken so far remain nothing more than eye-wash.

A sweeping statewide investigation by the FSDA has unmasked a massive pricing syndicate, proving that the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of identical life-saving drugs varies wildly across institutional supplies.

## Shocking Disparities: Same Brand, Different Price Tags

An analysis of pharmacy data collected from 214 hospitals across Uttar Pradesh has exposed systemic manipulation in the pricing of 167 essential drugs.

  • InOza (Inotuzumab Ozogamicin): Pfizer’s critical oncology drug showed an astronomical price variance of 27,390 rupees, retailing between 3,02,610 rupees and 3,30,000 rupees across different institutional channels.

  • Tenectereplase: Reliance Lifesciences’ cardiac drug was found priced anywhere from 43,119.14 rupees to 49,060 rupees—a direct loot of 5,940.86 rupees on a single vial.

  • Benetas (Bevacizumab): Intas Pharmaceuticals’ product showed a variance of 5,699.10 rupees.

  • Albuseal: Human Albumin 20% recorded an unexplained gap of 3,003 rupees between suppliers.

## Toothless Regulators and Helpless Citizens

While annual price revisions are legally capped at 10 percent, hospitals and pharmaceutical giants are exploiting institutional supply loopholes to drive up trade margins. The FSDA has merely forwarded a list of 167 tainted drugs to New Delhi, leaving suffering patients entirely at the mercy of profit-hungry healthcare mafias. Unless strict criminal accountability and uniform pricing caps are enforced, this legalized loot of common citizens will continue unchecked.
