Rising Costs of Garlic, Ginger and Lemon Add Pressure to Household Budgets

India’s latest inflation figures point to mounting pressure on household budgets, with retail inflation rising to 5.54 per cent and food inflation reaching 7.74 per cent in September 2026. According to provisional Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, price pressures intensified compared with August, raising concerns about the cost of everyday essentials.
Rural Households Face Greater Pressure
Combined retail inflation increased from 4.83 per cent in August to 5.54 per cent in September. Food inflation climbed from 5.97 per cent to 7.74 per cent over the same period.
The burden was heavier in rural areas, where retail inflation stood at 6.08 per cent, compared with 4.88 per cent in urban areas. Rural food inflation reached 8.06 per cent, while the urban rate was 7.18 per cent.
The figures highlight the uneven impact of rising prices, with rural households experiencing a sharper increase in the cost of living.

Onion Prices Lead the Surge
Among the items listed in the official release, onion recorded the steepest annual inflation, at 108.09 per cent. Garlic inflation stood at 54.62 per cent, while ginger rose by 62.85 per cent. Lemon prices registered inflation of 36.41 per cent. Silver jewellery also recorded a substantial annual increase of 87.80 per cent.
There were some exceptions. Potato prices declined by 11.50 per cent year-on-year, while tomato prices fell by 8.62 per cent. However, falling prices for selected items do not necessarily offset increases across other essential goods.
The Household Budget Squeeze
Higher food prices can force families to devote a larger share of their income to daily necessities, leaving less room for savings, healthcare, education and other expenses. The impact can be particularly difficult for households with limited or irregular incomes.
The September figures underline the importance of monitoring essential commodity prices and addressing supply-side disruptions. Seasonal availability, transportation costs and market conditions can all influence retail prices, although the CPI figures alone do not establish the precise cause of each increase.
Relief Must Be Measured at the Market
Inflation data provide a broad measure of price movements, but the experience of individual households depends on their spending patterns and local market conditions. The latest figures make clear that food prices remain a major source of pressure.
The challenge for policymakers is to ensure that price monitoring, supply management and other corrective measures translate into meaningful relief for consumers—not merely improved headline indicators.
