In a major push toward road safety reforms, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) reviewed nationwide implementation of the PM Rahat scheme aimed at providing assured hospital treatment to road accident victims. The high-level meeting was chaired by Union Minister Nitin Jairam Gadkari.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2026, the scheme entitles every eligible road accident victim to cashless treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh for seven days from the date of the accident.
Integrated with the ERSS 112 helpline, the initiative ensures victims are transported to designated hospitals within the “golden hour,” potentially preventing nearly 50% of fatalities.
The system digitally links MoRTH’s eDAR platform with the National Health Authority (NHA) TMS 2.0 system, enabling seamless reporting, police verification, hospital admission, claims processing, and payments. Hospitals will be reimbursed through the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund within 10 days of claim approval.
With district-level grievance redressal and coordinated efforts from states and ministries, the PM Rahat scheme signals a technology-driven, whole-of-government approach to saving lives on Indian roads.
