: In a spicy and dramatic crackdown that has sent shockwaves through the housing finance market, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has targetted Can Fin Homes Limited. By an aggressive regulatory order dated June 18, 2026, the central bank has slammed a ₹2.70 lakh monetary penalty on the company for violating the sacred ‘Fair Practices Code’. The regulator’s sharp move has left the entire non-banking financial sector completely rattled.
The Million-Dollar Mystery: Where is the Principal going?
The core of this financial drama reads like a corporate thriller. Can Fin Homes was diligently collecting monthly loan instalments (EMIs) from its borrowers, but when it came to transparency, they chose to play hide-and-seek. The company flatly failed to show the clear bifurcation between the interest and the principal component in the receipts. Consumers were practically paying their hard-earned money without knowing how much of their debt was actually getting cleared—a classic case of systemic opacity!
Busted by National Housing Bank’s Forensic Eye
The high-profile cover-up was blown wide open during a rigorous statutory inspection conducted by the National Housing Bank (NHB), which scrutinized the firm’s financial position as of March 31, 2025. Upon discovering this massive compliance loophole, the RBI immediately fired off a show-cause notice. Despite Can Fin Homes trying their best to sugarcoat the situation during personal hearings, the RBI wasn’t buying any excuses. The central bank invoked Section 52A of the National Housing Bank Act, 1987 to drop the hammer.
The Final Warning: Agreements Safe but Compliance is Non-Negotiable
While the RBI spiced things up with this penal action, it clarified that this fine is purely for regulatory deficiencies and does not cancel or invalidate ongoing loan agreements between the company and its customers. However, the central bank dropped a looming threat: this penalty is completely “without prejudice,” meaning if Can Fin Homes doesn’t mend its ways, much bigger and harsher punishments are waiting in the pipeline!
