In a decisive move to reinforce confidence in India’s rapidly expanding digital financial ecosystem, the Government of India and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have unveiled a series of robust measures aimed at strengthening digital banking security, tightening oversight of FinTech firms and digital lending platforms, and safeguarding consumer interests.
Responding to a written question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary stated that, following extensive consultations with financial regulators and industry stakeholders, the government has significantly enhanced the country’s cyber resilience, self-regulatory framework, and digital consumer protection architecture.
RBI Rolls Out Stronger Self-Regulatory Framework
To improve accountability and ethical practices across the FinTech ecosystem, RBI has introduced a comprehensive framework for Self-Regulatory Organisations for FinTech (SRO-FT). In addition, stricter minimum cybersecurity standards have been mandated for mobile and web-based banking channels to counter evolving digital threats.
AI and Machine Learning to Combat Financial Fraud
India’s digital payment infrastructure has received a major technological boost with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) deploying advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) models to monitor UPI transactions. The intelligent systems can rapidly detect suspicious activities, helping prevent fraudulent transactions before they are completed.
DPDP Law Strengthens Data Privacy
Consumer data protection has also been significantly reinforced through the implementation of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act and its accompanying rules. The legislation establishes a stronger legal framework for responsible data handling, greater transparency, and enhanced accountability across digital platforms.
Multi-Layered Defence Against Cybercrime
To curb illegal loan applications and online financial scams, the Government has strengthened the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, the 1930 Cyber Helpline, the SACHET portal, and eBAAT awareness campaigns. These initiatives provide citizens with real-time reporting mechanisms, faster grievance redressal, and greater awareness against digital financial fraud.
With AI-powered fraud detection, stronger regulatory oversight, enhanced cybersecurity standards, and a comprehensive data protection regime, India is building one of the world’s most resilient and consumer-centric digital financial ecosystems—marking a significant leap toward secure, transparent, and inclusive digital banking.
