India and Algeria have taken a significant step toward deepening their defence partnership during the inaugural meeting of the India-Algeria Joint Commission held in New Delhi. Both sides agreed to expand cooperation across key areas, signaling a stronger strategic alignment between the two nations.

The meeting was co-chaired by Amitabh Prasad, Joint Secretary (International Cooperation) from India, and Major General Kayed Nouredine, Chief of Staff of the Algerian Navy. Discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in training, joint military exercises, defence medical services, and defence industrial cooperation.

A major outcome of the meeting was the signing of a framework mechanism to monitor and implement defence cooperation activities. This framework will serve as a guiding structure for future engagements under the Joint Commission.

The Indian delegation included officials from the armed forces, Integrated Defence Staff, Department of Defence Production, DRDO, Armed Forces Medical Services, and the Ministry of External Affairs, reflecting a comprehensive and coordinated approach to strengthening defence ties.

Defence relations between India and Algeria have been steadily progressing, particularly after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2024. High-level visits and continued engagement have further reinforced this partnership.

Ahead of the meeting, the Algerian delegation paid tribute to fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial, highlighting mutual respect and shared values between the two countries.

Experts believe that this enhanced cooperation will not only boost bilateral defence capabilities but also contribute to regional stability and global security. Future collaborations are expected to include joint projects in defence manufacturing, research, and training initiatives.
