In a major push toward strengthening rural digital infrastructure, the Department of Telecommunications is accelerating internet connectivity across village panchayats under the BharatNet initiative. The move aims to enhance digital governance and expand access to online services in rural India.
According to official data, all ग्राम पंचायतs are being connected through multiple channels, including Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and private internet service providers. As per the BharatNet UNMS dashboard, more than 2.18 lakh out of 2.69 lakh ग्राम पंचायतs across the country are now service-ready.
State-wise progress highlights Uttar Pradesh as a frontrunner, with 47,451 out of 57,695 panchayats prepared for connectivity. Other major states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Bihar, and Karnataka have also recorded significant advancements.
Over the past five financial years (2020–21 to 2024–25), the government has invested ₹22,001.30 crore in the BharatNet project, underlining its commitment to bridging the digital divide.
Officials state that the initiative will enable wider access to e-governance, online education, telemedicine, and digital payment services in rural areas. It is also expected to boost rural economies by creating new opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship.
Experts believe BharatNet is a cornerstone in India’s Digital transformation, ensuring inclusive growth by connecting the last mile and empowering villages with high-speed broadband infrastructure.
