India witnessed a disturbing surge in crimes against children in 2024, with official data revealing a total of 1,87,702 registered cases across the country. The rising numbers have intensified concerns over child safety, policing efficiency, and the effectiveness of existing protection mechanisms.

Maharashtra recorded the highest number of child crime cases at 24,171, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 22,222 cases and Madhya Pradesh with 21,908 cases. Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Odisha, and West Bengal also reported alarming figures, exposing the growing vulnerability of children across multiple states.

Experts warn that the continuous rise in crimes against minors reflects deep-rooted social and systemic failures. The data also points toward inconsistent investigation quality and weak prosecution in several regions. Delhi reported a shocking crime rate of 138.4 per lakh child population — one of the highest in the country — despite repeated claims of improved law and order.

Assam witnessed a dramatic spike in recent years, while states like Haryana and Chhattisgarh reported high crime rates combined with poor conviction-related indicators. Child rights activists argue that many cases involving abuse, trafficking, cyber exploitation, and sexual violence remain underreported, making the real situation potentially worse.

Legal experts believe delayed trials, lack of child-sensitive policing, weak forensic support, and social stigma continue to hamper justice delivery for victims. In several states, the chargesheeting rate remains unsatisfactory, raising fears that offenders may escape punishment due to procedural lapses.

The report has renewed calls for stronger child protection laws, improved cyber surveillance, school safety reforms, fast-track courts, and better coordination between police, judiciary, and welfare agencies. Activists say that unless immediate corrective measures are taken, crimes against children could become one of India’s most serious social crises in the coming years.
