India marked a major milestone in indigenous defence technology as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted the maiden flight test of the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) weapon system on May 7, 2026, off the Odisha coast.

TARA is India’s first indigenous glide weapon system developed as a modular range extension kit capable of converting unguided warheads into precision-guided weapons. The advanced system is expected to significantly enhance strike accuracy, operational flexibility, and combat effectiveness at a relatively low cost.

The weapon system has been designed and developed by DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories. Defence experts believe the system will provide the Indian Armed Forces with a powerful capability to engage enemy ground targets with high precision from extended ranges.

According to DRDO officials, TARA represents the country’s first glide weapon equipped with advanced low-cost technologies. The project has been developed in collaboration with Development Cum Production Partners (DCPP) and several Indian industries. Production activities for the system have already commenced.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, IAF, and industry partners for the successful test, calling it a major step toward strengthening India’s indigenous defence capabilities and self-reliance in military technology.

DRDO Chairman Samir V. Kamat also praised the scientific and technical teams involved in the project and described the successful test as a significant achievement for India’s defence modernization programme.
