In a landmark move to strengthen India’s defence preparedness, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh virtually inaugurated the country’s first Department of Military Medicine at the Command Hospital (Central Command), Lucknow. The institution marks a transformational step towards building a world-class military healthcare ecosystem capable of addressing future battlefield, disaster and biological threats.

A New Era of Battlefield Medicine

Calling military healthcare a cornerstone of national security, Rajnath Singh said the department will ensure advanced medical support for soldiers while developing indigenous doctrines and operational medical capabilities for future conflicts.

Built for Tomorrow’s Threats

The department will focus on battlefield trauma care, combat psychiatry, emergency medicine, disaster response, CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives) preparedness, military logistics, telemedicine, simulation-based training and AI-enabled medical decision systems.

Research at the Core

Describing the institution as a future Centre of Excellence, the Defence Minister said it would emerge as India’s premier research hub for military medicine, helping the armed forces respond effectively to evolving technological and unconventional security challenges.

Technology as a Force Multiplier

Emphasising preventive healthcare, Singh advocated the use of Artificial Intelligence, wearable technologies, predictive analytics and advanced diagnostics for real-time monitoring of soldiers’ health, stating that prevention is the first line of defence in modern warfare.

Global Military Medical Leadership

The department will be developed in phases, beginning with academic programmes before evolving into an internationally recognised centre for military medical education, research and operational excellence.

Aligned with India’s Defence Strategy Vision 2026–30, the initiative reinforces indigenous capability, operational readiness and innovation, positioning India to become a global leader in military medical science while strengthening national security for the decades ahead.
