Calls Out “Double Standards” on Women’s Quota

BSP chief Mayawati has launched a sharp political attack on Congress and the Samajwadi Party over their stance on reservation and women’s quota, accusing them of inconsistency and political opportunism.
In a detailed statement, Mayawati alleged that Congress has historically failed to safeguard the constitutional rights of SC, ST, and OBC communities. She pointed out that while the party is now advocating inclusion of these groups in the women’s reservation framework, it did little during its tenure at the Centre to ensure proper implementation of reservation quotas.
She further highlighted that the 27% reservation for OBCs, as recommended by the Mandal Commission, was not implemented by Congress but was eventually enforced during the tenure of former Prime Minister V. P. Singh, with consistent efforts from BSP.
Targeting the Samajwadi Party, Mayawati stated that a 1994 report recommending OBC benefits for backward Muslims was ignored during SP’s rule in Uttar Pradesh. She claimed that it was BSP’s government in 1995 that took swift action to implement these recommendations.
She accused SP of adopting a “double standard” approach—acting differently in power and in opposition. On the issue of women’s reservation, Mayawati suggested that if the bill is to be implemented soon, it should be based on the 2011 Census data.
Concluding her remarks, she advised marginalized communities to remain cautious of political narratives and focus on self-reliance, stating that no party has consistently prioritized their long-term welfare.
