In a major development for the Indian judiciary, President Droupadi Murmu has officially appointed five new judges to the Supreme Court of India. The landmark announcement came via an official notification issued by the President’s office on June 1, 2026, marking a significant boost to the judicial strength of the apex court.

Exercising the constitutional powers conferred under Clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President cleared the elevation of four Chief Justices from prominent High Courts across the country, along with one distinguished Senior Advocate from the Supreme Court Bar. According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB) release, the newly appointed judges are:

  • Justice Sheel Nagu: Chief Justice, Punjab and Haryana High Court

  • Justice Shree Chandrashekhar: Chief Justice, Bombay High Court

  • Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva: Chief Justice, Madhya Pradesh High Court

  • Justice Arun Palli: Chief Justice, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court

  • Mrs. Venkita Subramani Mohana: Senior Advocate

The inclusion of these legal stalwarts is expected to significantly accelerate the disposal of pending cases in the top court. The elevation of Senior Advocate V.S. Mohana directly from the Bar also highlights a progressive step toward balancing gender representation in the higher judiciary.

As per the official mandate, these high-profile appointments will come into effect from the respective dates they assume charge of their offices. Chief Justice of India is expected to administer the oath of office to the new judges in the coming days.
