In a major healthcare initiative, the Uttar Pradesh government has introduced a simplified and advanced treatment for Anemia among pregnant and lactating women. The new approach enables treatment of severe anemia with just a single injection, significantly improving ease and effectiveness of care.
Speaking at a workshop in Lucknow, Amit Kumar Ghosh, Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department, announced that the state has procured 3.7 lakh doses of intravenous iron. The treatment involves Ferric Carboxymaltose, an advanced formulation that can address severe anemia with a single dose, reducing the need for repeated medication.
According to National Family Health Survey (NFHS) data, anemia prevalence among pregnant women in the state has declined from 52% in 2006 to 46% in 2021. Among adolescent girls, it has reduced from 56.5% to 52.9%. Additionally, the coverage of iron and folic acid supplementation has reached 95%, reflecting improved healthcare outreach.
Dr. Ranjana Khare, Director General (Training), emphasized the importance of continuous training for the success of anemia control programs. She noted that over 10,000 district and block-level medical officers and staff nurses have already been trained to effectively implement the initiative.
Health experts believe that this single-injection treatment model will play a crucial role in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates, as anemia remains a significant risk factor during pregnancy. The simplified treatment is especially beneficial for rural and remote areas where access to repeated medical care is limited.
The initiative marks a significant step toward strengthening maternal healthcare in Uttar Pradesh and aligns with the broader goal of ensuring healthier mothers and children.
