The Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully activated an Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) on the Purvanchal Expressway in Sultanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, on April 22, 2026. The operation demonstrated the force’s high level of preparedness by conducting aircraft landings during both day and night.
The exercise was attended by several senior officials, including State Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar, along with top Air Force authorities. A wide range of aircraft participated in the operation, including Jaguar, Mirage-2000, Sukhoi-30 MKI, C-295, and AN-32, along with MI-17 V5 helicopters and the elite Garud commando unit.
The primary objective of this exercise was to validate the capability of conducting uninterrupted operations even in the absence of standard runways. By coordinating with the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) and local civil administration, the IAF successfully tested its standard operating procedures.
Such highway airstrips are considered critical for rapid deployment of forces during emergencies and for effective disaster response. They significantly enhance national security by providing alternative operational bases.
Experts believe that the successful activation of the ELF not only strengthens India’s strategic preparedness but also boosts its disaster response capabilities, ensuring swift action during critical situations.
This initiative marks another step forward in enhancing India’s defence infrastructure and operational flexibility in times of need.
