Religious Tourism Push Gains Momentum in Lucknow

The Uttar Pradesh government is shifting its tourism strategy by focusing not only on major pilgrimage centers but also on lesser-known religious sites. In a significant move, the ancient Jalsai Nath Temple in Sarojini Nagar, Lucknow, is set for a major transformation under a ₹89.82 lakh development project, with ₹60 lakh already released as the first installment.
State Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh emphasized that the initiative aims to convert the temple into a modern religious tourism hub. The project includes construction of a waiting hall, covered sheds, seating platforms, steel railings, RCC benches, and installation of street lighting. Facilities like clean drinking water and eco-friendly infrastructure are also part of the plan to enhance visitor experience.
Believed to be over 200 years old, the temple holds strong religious significance among locals and is considered a self-manifested shrine of Lord Shiva. Despite heavy footfall during festivals like Shravan and Maha Shivratri, the site has long suffered from lack of basic amenities. The ongoing development is expected to address these gaps and attract a wider range of visitors.
The move reflects a broader strategy by the state government to expand religious tourism as a key economic driver. Alongside Jalsai Nath Temple, other sites in Lucknow such as Koneshwar Mahadev Temple and Sant Ravidas Temple are also being developed to create a diversified religious circuit.
Tourism data further strengthens the government’s push. In 2025, Lucknow recorded over 17.1 million visitors, including more than 38,000 foreign tourists. Officials believe that upgrading smaller religious sites could significantly boost these numbers and strengthen the city’s position on the tourism map.
However, concerns remain over timely execution and long-term maintenance of such projects. While the initiative signals strong intent, its real impact will depend on effective implementation and sustained management. For now, the project stands as a key step toward redefining Lucknow’s religious tourism landscape.
