Kailash Yatra Becoming Less Accessible

The subsidy distribution ceremony for Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims highlighted a growing concern—rising travel costs are far outpacing government support. While the state distributed ₹1 lakh assistance to pilgrims, voices within the event questioned whether the amount is sufficient in today’s scenario.
Committee president K.K. Singh urged the government to increase the subsidy to ₹1.5 lakh, citing steep travel expenses. According to him, the cost via Lipulekh route has crossed ₹2.31 lakh, while the Nathula route can go up to ₹3.35 lakh. In comparison, the current subsidy appears marginal and inadequate.
Although the Chief Minister praised pilgrims for their spiritual journey, the economic reality tells a different story. The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is gradually becoming unaffordable for common devotees, limiting participation to those with higher financial capacity.
Senior pilgrim Anandpal Singh Nimbadiya emphasized the cultural and spiritual importance of the pilgrimage. However, the financial burden remains a pressing issue that cannot be ignored.
Data from 2025 reveals that out of 555 pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh, only 84 traveled through government arrangements, while a significant 471 relied on private means—indicating gaps in public facilitation and affordability.
The event, while celebratory in tone, exposed underlying concerns about accessibility and inclusivity. Without increased financial support and improved arrangements, the pilgrimage risks becoming exclusive rather than inclusive.
