The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is now significantly impacting the global economy, prompting the World Bank Group to issue a strong warning. Emerging market economies are facing increasing pressure due to rising commodity prices and disrupted supply chains.

According to the World Bank, several client countries have reached out, highlighting challenges caused by escalating costs and logistical disruptions. Shipping route interruptions have increased transportation expenses, while supply risks are spreading beyond energy into fertilizers and essential agricultural inputs.

Data indicates that crude oil prices surged by nearly 40 percent between February and March, while liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments to Asia saw a rise of almost two-thirds. Additionally, nitrogen-based fertilizer prices increased by around 50 percent in March, raising concerns about agricultural productivity and food security.

In response, the World Bank has assured swift action to support affected nations. The institution is preparing a comprehensive response, combining immediate financial relief, policy guidance, and private sector support to stabilize economies and safeguard growth.

The Bank plans to utilize its full range of financial instruments, including crisis response tools and pre-arranged financing facilities, to deliver timely assistance. It will also provide liquidity, trade finance, and working capital support to businesses through its private sector arms.

Experts warn that the longer the conflict persists and the greater the damage to critical infrastructure, the more severe the economic consequences will be.

The World Bank emphasized its commitment to closely monitor developments and work directly with affected countries to mitigate risks and protect economic progress.
