EU Clears India for Continued Seafood Exports Beyond September 2026

India’s seafood export sector has received a significant boost after the European Union included India in its revised draft list permitting continued export of aquaculture and marine products to the European market beyond September 2026. The move removes uncertainty created by an earlier EU regulation issued in October 2024, where India had been excluded from the list of approved third countries.

The revised draft, published by the European Commission on May 12, 2026, acknowledges India’s compliance with stringent EU regulations related to antimicrobial residues and food safety standards in animal-origin products. The development is expected to ensure uninterrupted exports of Indian seafood products to European nations in the coming years.

The European Union emerged as India’s third-largest seafood export destination during 2025-26. India exported marine products worth nearly USD 1.593 billion to the EU, accounting for almost 19 percent of the country’s total seafood exports. The export value registered a remarkable growth of over 41 percent compared to the previous financial year, while export volumes increased by more than 38 percent. Farm-raised shrimp remained the leading export commodity driving this growth.

Officials believe the achievement reflects the continuous efforts of the Department of Commerce, Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), and Export Inspection Council (EIC) in strengthening regulatory compliance and promoting responsible fisheries practices.

India has significantly upgraded its National Residue Control Programme (NRCP), introducing stricter monitoring systems, antibiotic residue testing, traceability mechanisms, and quality assurance protocols in seafood processing and aquaculture operations. These measures helped India meet the EU’s rigorous import requirements.

Experts say the revised EU approval will strengthen India’s position in the global seafood trade while creating additional employment opportunities and increasing foreign exchange earnings. The decision is also being seen as a positive outcome of sustained technical cooperation and regulatory coordination between India and the European Union.
