Jewellers Raise Alarm Over Falling Gold Sales and GST Pressure

Traders Fear Tax Notices as Gold Market Uncertainty Grows

 Concerns are growing among jewellery traders in Uttar Pradesh following recent remarks made by Narendra Modi regarding gold purchases and investments. Acting on instructions from Yogi Adityanath, senior officials of the state tax department held a meeting with representatives of major bullion and jewellery trade associations in Lucknow to discuss the possible impact on the sector.

The meeting, held at the State Tax Office in Gomti Nagar, was chaired by Principal Secretary Tax Kamini Ratan Chauhan and senior official Nitin Bansal. Representatives from the Uttar Pradesh Sarafa Association and the Indian Bullion Jewellers Association participated and submitted suggestions as well as concerns related to the future of the jewellery trade.

Traders expressed apprehension that a decline in gold jewellery sales could directly affect GST collections in the state. During the discussion, business representatives warned that reduced monthly sales figures might trigger “show cause notices” from GST authorities, leading to increased pressure and scrutiny on traders.

Sarafa leader Aadish Kumar Jain reportedly stated that traders often receive notices questioning sudden declines in monthly turnover, with authorities suspecting tax evasion. He argued that if consumer demand weakens due to changing market sentiment or public statements, genuine businesses should not be subjected to unnecessary departmental harassment.

Officials assured the delegation that the concerns raised by the jewellery trade were important and would be forwarded to the Chief Minister for consideration. The administration also indicated that the matter would be examined sympathetically.

Economic observers believe that any prolonged slowdown in gold sales could impact not only traders but also government tax revenue. Trade bodies are now demanding a more practical and business-friendly approach from tax authorities, especially during periods of weak market demand and economic uncertainty.
