Four Years After Completion, No OPD Services Started at UP’s Key Unani Institution
Uttar Pradesh is witnessing growing controversy over the delayed operational launch of the newly built Government Unani Medical College and Hospital in Bareilly. Strong allegations of administrative negligence and inaction have surfaced against the state’s Unani Services Directorate, with members of the Unani community claiming that the institution is heading towards closure even before becoming fully functional.
Dr. Shakeel Ahmad, a member of the Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbi Medical Board, issued an open letter criticizing the functioning of the department. He alleged that despite the building being officially handed over by PWD in December 2025, authorities failed to begin OPD services, hospital operations, or academic activities in time.
According to Unani representatives, the prolonged delay allowed uncertainty to grow around the institution, with reports now emerging about possible shifting of another department into the same building. Critics argue that timely activation of medical services could have secured the institution’s identity and prevented the present situation.
The issue has sparked anger among Unani doctors, students, social organizations, and medicine manufacturers, who describe the college as one of Uttar Pradesh’s most important minority-linked Unani healthcare institutions. Several groups have accused officials of ignoring repeated demands and remaining silent while the future of the college remained uncertain.
Dr. Ahmad has demanded immediate commencement of OPD and hospital services, protection of the building from any departmental transfer, and accountability for what he termed “administrative failure and negligence.” Calls for a larger “Save Unani Movement” are also gaining momentum on social media and within professional organizations.
The controversy has now raised larger questions about governance, project execution, and the future of traditional Unani medical education in the state. Critics say delays at the administrative level are ultimately damaging both public trust and the image of the government.
