Piyush Goyal Pushes for Faster CEPA Agreement

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held a series of high-level meetings in Toronto aimed at strengthening India-Canada economic ties, boosting investments, and accelerating negotiations for the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
During discussions with Canada’s International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to achieving a bilateral trade target of 50 billion US dollars by 2030 and concluding the India-Canada CEPA negotiations at the earliest.
Speaking at the “Canada-India Building Bridges” event at the World Trade Center in Toronto, Piyush Goyal highlighted opportunities for collaboration in advanced manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, clean technology, energy, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and digital infrastructure. More than 150 representatives from industries and investor groups participated in the event.
Canada also announced a “Team Canada Trade Mission” to India later this year, which will focus on exploring partnerships in critical sectors including renewable energy, nuclear energy, AI, and advanced manufacturing.
Goyal co-chaired the Canada-India Investment Roundtable with senior financial investors, pension funds, banks, and government representatives from both countries. He invited Canadian investors to participate in India’s fast-growing sectors such as clean energy, manufacturing, digital infrastructure, supply chain diversification, and technology.
The Union Minister also held one-on-one meetings with major Canadian companies and institutional investors from sectors including insurance, banking, food processing, and critical minerals. Discussions focused on India’s improving business environment, policy reforms, skilled STEM workforce, and opportunities created through production-linked incentive schemes.
During his visit, Piyush Goyal paid tribute at the Kanishka Memorial in Toronto to the victims of the Air India AI-182 terror attack. Later, while addressing the Indian diaspora in Brampton, he praised the Indian community’s contribution towards strengthening economic, trade, and cultural ties between India and Canada.
